The Bauxite Quarries

The bauxite quarries are located near Otranto, near the Punta Palascìa lighthouse and Monte Sant’Angelo. This place was a working mine until 1976, from which bauxite, a sedimentary rock used for the production of aluminium, was extracted.
Following the closure of the mine, water from the underground aquifer began to seep inside, forming a small lake.
The contrast between the emerald green water and the surrounding red terrain creates a unique setting. Furthermore, the lush vegetation contrasts with the bare walls of the quarry, offering a landscape full of contrasts just a few kilometers from the sea.
